About 40 peace officers, corrections personnel, Special Olympics athletes, and community members are expected to participate Tuesday, May 23, in the local leg of the 31st annual Missouri Law Enforcement Torch Run.
The Torch Run is the largest year-round fundraising event for Special Olympics Illinois.
Law enforcement agencies across the state are hosting a series of torch relays this week, leading up to Louisiana's Special Olympics this weekend, and now Northeast Louisiana is taking the torch.
South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch Run Assistant Director Dave Stratton says, "There's nothing like it". The Dunkin' Donuts in Quincy opened last fall. Along with that, you will also be able to purchase Special Olympics t-shirts with all proceeds going to the Special Olympics. This year the state summer games will be held at Emory University.
A torch led more than 100 police officers, students and others through the streets of Cornwall on Wednesday morning, causing people to come out of their businesses or lean out their apartment windows to watch the procession go by.
It's free to take part in the event as a runner. Since its inception, more than $10 million has been raised through fundraisers providing training, equipment, venues, uniforms and transportation for hundreds of thousands of Special Olympics New York athletes. "It also shows the athletes that people truly care about them!"
