Haryana: Victory for Rewari schoolgirls, govt upgrades school

Postado Mai 19, 2017

"We were asking government to upgrade our high school to the level of senior secondary school, as it was becoming impossible for us to walk to the school in another village in wake of the daily harassment from the local boys on way", said a girl student. A notification to this effect has also been issued by the School Education Department.

"Sanction of the Governor of Haryana is hereby accorded to upgrade the Government High School Gothra Tappa Dahina (Rewari) to the level of Government Senior Secondary School w.e.f. session 2017-18".

One of the girls on hunger strike said: "We fear harassment and molestation by youths of other villages and hence, we are demanding upgradations of our school up to Class XII".

"The demands of the girls are genuine", village head Suresh Chauhan told Xinhua.

The girls who had been sitting on hunger strike also received support from their parents, who also joined the protest in the village.

"These young men used to pull our scarves and pass lewd comments", the student said.

Forced to act following the massive agitation by school girls in Rewari, the Haryana Government announced that they have taken the decision to up-grade the school.

Sharma said that they have made a decision to relax the rules for the upgrading process after discussion with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the additional chief secretary of the school education department, P K Das.

The eve-teasing allegation by the girls that put the government in a tight spot flies on the face of the Haryana police chief BS Sandhu who has been claiming that effective steps have been taken to deal with "eve-teasing" cases in the state under the much-touted "Operation Durga".

Officials had earlier said the school could not be upgraded as it did not meet the condition of a minimum of 150 students required for the senior secondary level.

"We have upgraded the school at Gothra (village)", he told reporters, to much celebration from the protesters. The state has also witnessed some horrifying crimes against women in the recent times.

A year ago a school girl was allegedly raped on way to school in the district. The residents of Suma Khera village had also staged a sit-in demonstration against the BJP-led Haryana Governmen demanding upgradatin of primary schools to middle schools.
