Planned Parenthood to close 4 Iowa clinics after funding cut

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced today that due to the loss of most of their state funding they would be closing clinics in Bettendorf, Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland said it will continue to operate eight clinics in Iowa.

Whatever federal money was going to Planned Parenthood's health centers through Medicaid reimbursements or Title X grants would go to other health clinics, so all patients would have to do is change their providers. The budget cuts will require Planned Parenthood to close four of the 12 Iowa clinics that it now operates. They provide services including cancer screenings, birth control, STD testing and annual checkups.

"Defunding Planned Parenthood will set a health care crisis in motion in Iowa", said de Baca, "we will be watching and holding politicians accountable".

Planned Parenthood of IN and Kentucky filed suit Thursday to block a new abortion law stressing parental rights when a minor seeks an abortion. Texas, in 2011, took similar action and created a family planning program. More than 80 family planning centers also closed in Texas, a third of which were Planned Parenthood affiliates. Participants will automatically be transferred to the new state-run program, which covers the same services as long as they are not sought at a clinic offering abortions.

The cut was part of the state's roughly $7.2 billion budget, which was approved recently by outgoing Gov. Terry Branstad. Women living in the 13 percent of USA counties with at least one Planned Parenthood but no contraceptive-providing FQHCs at all would have to travel unnecessarily long distances just to get basic care, burdening other communities' health centers with surges of new patients.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb said before signing the legislation in April that he sees it "as a parental rights issue and responsibility and common sense".
