The congressman underwent another surgery on Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, .

Scalise, 51, sustained injuries to internal organs, broken bones and severe bleeding after being shot in his left hip on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in a Washington suburb. Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", said Dr. Jack Sava at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center. While he's still under sedation, Sava says Scalise has responded to family members. The hospital said he would require additional operations and said he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday evening.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

The named congressmen are all conservative members of the House Freedom Caucus, and the list appears to confirm that the shooting was not random but a premeditated attempt to assassinate the politicians.

As the game progressed, MedStar Washington Hospital Center released an update on Scalise's condition. Scalise was shot Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, .

"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers". The Capitol Police, which were only at the field because Scalise is part of House leadership, fired back and struck Hodgkinson, who died at the hospital from his wounds. Ivanka Trump, joined by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and her two eldest children Arabella and Joseph Kushner, presented a $50,000 check from "Friends in the Trump Administration" to "Congressional Sports for Charity" at the game.

"Though we have our differences, what unites us is so much stronger: our love of country, our devotion to its people".

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington.

Before the event, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said: "Tonight we will go to the game, play our hardest, but we will all be Team Scalise". His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.

Lobbyist Matt Mika also remains in serious condition, while congressional staff Zach Barth and U.S. Capitol Police officers Agent David Bailey and Crystal Griner continue to nurse their own injuries.
