Trump blasts obstruction of justice probe reports as 'phony'

US President Donald Trump on Thursday denounced reports that the special counsel appointed to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 presidential campaign is now examining whether he tried to obstruct justice, calling it a "phony story".

If the report is true and if it is confirmed that Trump obstructed justice by trying to get former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, and perhaps others, to end the Russian Federation probe, that could lead to the President's impeachment by Congress, something that many Democratic lawmakers say they would pursue if circumstances warrant.

A spokesman for Trump's personal attorney had strong words in response to the news.

"If this is true that five individuals inside of the United States government, whether it was the FBI or the Special Counsel's office - wherever it came from - leaked information about the president of the United States to the Washington Post, information about a supposed investigation, that is a crime", Sekulow told Fox News's Sean Hannity Wednesday night. Last week, former FBI Director James Comey told Congress he believed he was sacked by Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation investigation.

Trump previously suggested that the Flynn investigation be dropped, Comey alleged.

According to the paper, Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers's recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's investigators as early as this week.

Trump after the shooting called for unity in a statement delivered at the White House.

President Donald Trump is telling his Twitter followers that they are witnessing the "single greatest WITCH HUNT in American history".

Trump wrote, "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

The Washington Post also claims that right after Comey gave this document to Mueller, Mr. Mueller then opened an investigation of President Trump on whether of not he obstructed justice in firing James Comey.

The shift toward investigating the U.S. president began days after Trump fired James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director on May 9, the Post said.

He reiterated tweets from Thursday morning about the investigation.

The transition official said the organization has also separately asked the General Services Administration to preserve records from the Trump transition that were transferred to its facilities after Trump's inauguration. "I don't know how anyone can see this as anything but obstruction of justice".
