"So I don' gets a little tiresome because I know we play at a very high level, and I know that top to bottom we're the best in the country in terms of balance", Bowlsby said.

Oklahoma's David Boren, the only one of the Big 12 presidents who has been in his position since the league's inception two decades ago, was asked during the spring meetings the importance of the CFP when judging the league's success.

But Bowlsby said the decision to reinstate the title game was about providing the playoff selection committee a 13th data point.

"Make no mistake, it's not about making the playoff", Bowlsby said. It's about winning national championships.

The Big 12 is the smallest of the Power Five conferences with 10 teams, and the only one to play a full round-robin schedule each season.

The title game should increase that again next year. In that sense, Bowlsby said they are competing at a high level financially with the other top conferences.

The Big 12 is also breaking in three brand new head coaches in Matt Rhule, Tom Herman, and Lincoln Riley.

The Big 12 Conference reached new heights past year when it came to revenue distributed among league institutions. That would also take him through the negotiations of the league's next media rights contract.

"My health is good, I feel like I'm a pretty young 65".

On June 7, Stoops retired after 18 seasons as Oklahoma's head coach.

Bowlsby, hired in 2012 after working as the athletic director at Stanford, Iowa and Northern Iowa, has been offered a contract extension by the Big 12's board of directors and plans to complete the paperwork soon.

"He was a tremendous influence on his staff and his players and his university for a very long period of time".

"It varies a little bit from institution to institution based upon how they did in some of our championships, but we distributed a little over $34 million past year", he said at Ford Center at The Star, the event's new home and the Dallas Cowboys worldwide headquarters. The new coaches have arguably the three biggest shoes in the conference to fill. I think they believe that I'm the right person to go through the process of looking for the right opportunity and optimizing our opportunity and then capitalizing on it from a financial standpoint.
