In yet another standoff, four Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday for fishing in their territorial waters.

Fisheries officials said the country boat fishermen, hailing from Jagadapattinam coastal hamlet in Pudukottai district, were arrested by a Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Norther Naval Command of the Sri Lankan Navy, when they were fishing in high seas about nine nautical miles off North-West of Kovilan coast.

The arrested fishermen along with their fishing trawler and fishing gear have been brought to the naval base SLNS Elara in Karainagar. On July 13, seven fishermen from Mandapam near here were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy at Neduntheevu and taken to Kangesanthurai port, for allegedly fishing in the Lankan waters. The fishermen had ventured into the sea four days back before they were arrested, they said.

This is the fourth instance of incarceration of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy this month.
