20th Century TV has tapped You're the Worst's Allison Bennett to pen the upcoming series based on the studio's long-running comedy that wrapped in 2014.
How I Met Your Mother is one of those shows we all fell in love with, and all felt heartbroken over when it came to an end.
Titled How I Met Your Father, the spin-off follows three years after 20th Century TV first attempted to stretch out the How I Met Your Mother narrative in a new series. The CBS sitcom's original creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are attached to executive produce the spin-off, though their involvement will be limited.
Then, last season the studio gave it another shot with This Is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger but due to their busy schedule, they were not able to focus on the project.
FOX Chairman, Dana Waldon revealed the studio's spin-off strategy this week, sharing it's an idea that has been stewing for quite some time. It's one that's been slowly cooked. Walden added, "If it's the right idea the right execution, we'll take that".
20th TV is taking a similar route with the proposed new spinoff, again called How I Met Your Father, which Bennett will write under the overall deal she signed with the studio in April. "She is completely original, hilariously amusing and a big, big talent". She had been earmarked for the job as 20th TV executives felt she might be flawless for it when they sat down with her after signing her into an overall deal.
