U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested 32 convicted sexual predators over the course of 10 days.
The men were picked up as part of "Operation SOAR", which stands for Sex Offender Alien Removal, on charges that range from sexual assault to rape. "These actions focus our resources on the most egregious criminals and promote public safety in the communities in which we live and work", Thomas R. Decker, field office director for NY, said in a press release.
The expansion of this program is yet another sign that the Trump administration is serious about cracking down on illegal immigration, a key component of the president's campaign for office.
The agency did not disclose any names because of privacy concerns, but listed the nationalities and crimes committed by some of the most egregious sex offenders on the list.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has successfully expanded a program that allows state and local law enforcement to enforce immigration law, The Daily Caller has learned. "ICE will not waver in its promise to arrest and remove criminal aliens from our neighborhoods".
It said those arrested included nationals from Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Dominican Republic as well as other immigrants were from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Mexico and Peru.
According to ICE officials, all 32 are in the process to be removed from the United States unless they have "outstanding orders of deportation", in which case they will be sent back immediately. The remaining individuals, including the man from Glen Cove, are in ICE custody awaiting either a hearing before an immigration judge or travel arrangements for deportation.
