Todd Bowles clearly trying to take the heat off Hackenberg

So Bowles on Saturday expects Hackenberg to perform somewhere between a legendary Cowboys quarterback and a disappointing one. The kid has got to get a chance to play, and make some mistakes and grow from it, and make good plays.

Though the coach said Hackenberg will see some time with the first-team offensive line, Bowles said the 2016 second-round pick's initial performance won't have any bearing on the quarterback competition, which he called "pretty even".

Bowles also said that Hackenberg will receive plenty of opportunities to prove himself during the preseason. "He's going to play the whole preseason".

"I'm not basing this game exclusively on Christian's star debut as a movie theater actor", he said. He's gonna get a lot of reps.

McCown and Hackenberg each took reps with the first team. Hackenberg isn't in the mix to start Week 1. Bowles announced that Bilal Powell (neck) will not play, and the status of Matt Forte (hamstring) has not been determined.

Thursday's training camp practice was the Jets' last before the preseason opener. Forte, 32, hasn't practiced since July 31. A leaner Hyde that is, who tells me he weighed in at 225 today, right where he wants to be. All in all, considering the lack of talent on the field with Hackenberg, it was an inconclusive game.
