Today it looks like they might not have enough.
NY announced that they have played Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day DL with shoulder inflammation early Saturday.
"From a structural standpoint he comes out fine".
"It's some general soreness and inflammation in the shoulder area and some fatigue", Tanaka said.
"We decided he needs a break", Girardi said. He struggled in his last start, lasting just four innings, walking five and allowing two earned runs. The Yankees have not named a replacement for Tanaka in the rotation.
The Yankees announced the roster moves before their game against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday afternoon, one day after placing left-hander CC Sabathia on the DL with a knee injury. Jordan Montgomery was recalled Friday to take Sabathia's turn in the rotation Sunday.
Girardi said the right-handers Luis Cessa and Bryan Mitchell were the leading candidates to start Monday's game against the Mets, which Tanaka had been scheduled to pitch. Asked about it, Girardi said "you can run out of starters". There has been no talk that Tanaka's shoulder was bothering him.
He is having by far his worst and most-inconsistent season with an 8-10 record and a 4.92 ERA in 23 starts. Most alarming were the five walks he issued.
This is the third time Tanaka has had to go on the disabled list. That does not count the final two weeks of last season when he was shut down because of a strained right forearm. Tanaka threw 88 pitches in the brief outing. "I know this is going to be a relatively short time off and I believe this time off will get me back stronger and back on track".
