Men in South Africa court on cannibalism charges — BBCI

A cannibal has handed himself in to a South African police station, presenting officers with a woman's leg and hand and telling them: "I am exhausted of eating human flesh".

Four men have appeared in the Escourt Magistrates Court in KwaZulu-Natal on charges of cannibalism and murder.

He then led investigators to a house where more body parts were found.

He told News24: "It was buried under big rocks and we had to call a machine to remove the rocks".

"A second suspect was also arrested in Estcourt".

"It is alleged that the suspects raped, killed and cut up the body of a woman, which they then consumed".

Labuschagne said people who ate human body parts were often in the throes of psychotic episodes.

Another spokeswoman, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, said the three main suspects were arrested on Friday night after one walked into Estcourt police station with his "tired of eating human flesh" bombshell.

"They showed us the body parts in one of the houses".

"It's very rare and unusual to get a case where people are actually eating human body parts - animal bites are often mistaken for human bites". In 2003 a man was arrested after police discovered a cooking pot full of body parts near his home in Esikhawini, Richards Bay.

Cannibalism in itself is not a crime in South Africa, but murder, mutilating a corpse and being in possession of human tissue are all criminal offences.
