Baltimore boxer Gervonta Davis missed his weight Friday, forcing the fighter to forfeit his world title on the eve of the biggest bout of his young career. The undefeated Davis officially weighed in at 132 pounds, two pounds higher than the limit for the super featherweight division.
Davis and Fonseca were both supposed to weigh in on stage at the T-Mobile Arena on Friday afternoon, but the pair were not introduced with Mayweather and McGregor appearing after Nathan Cleverly and Badou Jack.
Another stated: I'm young, I'm growing. He'll still fight Francisco Fonseca on the undercard of Saturday's show featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. "I had a chance to make the weight I knew I couldn't make it & that's that", he said. I will have a belt again.
Davis won the IBF super featherweight title by stopping Puerto Rico's Jose Pedraza (22-1, 12 KOs) in the seventh round January 12 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. This was slated to be his second title defense overall and his first in the United States.
Fonseca weighed in at 130 pounds and will be the only one able to win the vacant belt.
The fight between Davis and Fonseca will still take place, but for the American it will no longer be a title fight.
