Southeast Texas has been ravaged by Hurricane Harvey over the past week, and even though Commerce is hundreds of miles away, the local community is finding ways to help those in need. Forty-five stores in the affected areas have already reopened.
For people who want to send help, they can donate money to Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, which is operated by the Greater Houston Community Foundation under state mayor Sylvester Turner.
For every $1 donated, Walmart will contribute $2 worth of cash or, at Walmart's option, needed product to the American Red Cross, up to $10 million.
The City of Pineville in partnership with Lindsey Wilson College London Campus, is collecting items for Hurricane Harvey victims, via Hope for Houston.
"Our Texas family of customers and associates are experiencing devastating impact from this storm", said Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon.
If calling in or mailing a donation, please be sure to indicate that the donation is for the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.
Walmart says it will continue to support the areas affected by Harvey as they work to rebuild. In-kind donations such as large wire crates, cat litter and canned wet dog and cat food are among the group's most immediate needs.
Beyond the efforts by operators with Gulf Coast operations, PJM Interconnection, the nation's largest power grid, said it would donate $20,000 to the American Red Cross and match employee donations. It also planned to donate $1 million directly to the relief effort.
HousePaws will accept donations until next Friday at its locations on Centerton Road in Mount Laurel and on Jackson Road in Atco, Camden County. Monetary donations will also be accepted, with all proceeds going to the Houston Flood Relief Fund. Drop off supplies or donations from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. on September 2 at the Airtime Trampoline and Game Park, located at 662 E. Big Beaver Rd., Troy. Subaru will also donate vehicles to the Red Cross at a later date to further assist in recovery efforts.
The fundraiser begins Thursday and will run through Monday.
