A Texas woman's complaint about a Hobby Lobby display has sparked an impassioned discussion online.
Controversy is swirling after a woman posted on Facebook Thursday and called a Hobby Lobby display "racist". It is described as a natural decor with hints of the great outdoors, including large fluffs of white cotton finish on each stem. There is nothing decorative about raw cotton. "A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves", Rider wrote in the post.
The post has since been shared over 19,000 times, and it's gotten over 207,000 comments.
A Hobby Lobby shopper complained on Facebook about stalks of raw cotton being sold at the craft store, calling it "wrong on so many levels". A little sensitivity goes a long way. "There is beauty from ashes", one commenter wrote.
"How stupid! My family pic more cotton than you can imagine and we are Caucasians!" Another man says "My parents are Latino". He wouldn't be offended by this cotton plant, he would actually see the beauty in the plant.
