After Saints bench Kenny Vaccaro, Sean Payton sidesteps trade rumors

A "handful of teams" are engaged in trade talks with the New Orleans Saints regarding safety Kenny Vaccaro, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports on Friday.

Sean Payton isn't shying away from the idea that teams are inquiring. As awesome as Drew Brees is behind center, the Saints have gone 7-9 the past three seasons for good reason. Vaccaro did play briefly after the initial benching as trainers examined Bell for an injury, but once they determined Bell was healthy Vaccaro was back on the sideline.

Vaccaro admitted he didn't play his best in Week 1 but said he was surprised that he was benched. "I don't know what happened".

Vaccaro has five interceptions thus far in his National Football League career, but he hasn't been the elite-level ball hawk New Orleans thought it was getting when it drafted him. "I don't why I got pulled out of the game".

If the Saints were indeed looking at moving Vaccaro as they attempt to rebuild their very bad defense, then it would be a sure sign the team was looking to rebuild, rather than win now.

Vaccaro made a few mistakes in last Monday night's loss to Minnesota. Bell declined comment when asked about Vaccaro's benching, and the second-year safety admits he still has to improve. "There are a lot of things I can do to keep getting better". "I didn't know that was gonna overflow into this game until all of a sudden I was out", Vaccaro said. "It doesn't bother me".

Although there have been multiple reports that Vaccaro could be the centerpiece of a trade, he tried to block out the rumors in his preparation before the game. "It's not unusual this early in the season for teams to call about teams that have depth at running back, like we might, or depth at safety", Payton said, per The Advocate's Joel Erickson.
