Broadway is very busy these days with musicals about contemporary music stars.
"We have been discussing this musical for 10 years", Cher said in a statement.
The musical will first take the stage in Chicago, from June 12 to July 15, 2018, before heading to Broadway in NY.
Cher, 71 - an Academy Award-winning best actress for "Moonstruck" (1987) and a Grammy Award victor for her 1999 Best Dance Recording "Believe" - has recorded a string of hits, both solo and with her late husband and musical partner Sonny Bono.
The Cher Show is based on the life of Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere Bono Allman or as her friends call her, Cher! "I sobbed and laughed-and I was prepared not to like it", the 71-year-old diva tweeted.
Often referred to as the "Goddess of Pop", Cher has sold over 100 million records worldwide to date and is the only artist to have registered a Billboard No 1 hit single in each decade from the 1960s to the 2010s. Hits of hers that will reportedly be featured include "If I Could Turn Back Time", "I Got You Babe", "Believe", and "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves".
Ahead of the show's Broadway opening in the fall of 2018, it will head to Chicago and play several weeks starting on June 12, 2018 at the Oriental Theater. Jason Moore, the Tony-nominated director of Avenue Q and Pitch Perfect, will direct.
The press release states the musical will also feature a book by Rick Elice, who also wrote Jersey Boys show book.
