A terror attack was avoided at Paris St Germain's Parc Des Princes stadium on Saturday when an improvised explosive device was was found near the stadium hourse before their French Ligue 1 match against Bordeaux.
The device reportedly consisted of four gas cylinders covered in petrol and was found in the upmarket 16th arrondissement near the stadium.
We all remember the awful scenes from Paris in November 2015 and hope they are never repeated but they may have been at the weekend had police not found an explosive by PSG's ground hours before their game against Bordeaux. Apart from this, some of the world's biggest football players such as Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe featured for PSG.
Five men have been arrested in connection to the plot, one of them was a known Islamist extremist who was supposed to be under surveillance according to the Daily Mail.
A source said the four gas cylinders would have destroyed all of the surrounding area, they were linked to a "mobile phone that could ignite the cylinders, so causing an explosion".
The source added that the "device was soaked in petrol and operational".
"Five suspects were arrested at the scene, including a known radical with links to Islamist movements". It was found when a local resident from the Rue Chanez called police early in the morning at 4:30 AM on Saturday.
French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb suggested that the man may have escaped agents pursuing him by using a "friend" as a decoy.
It comes almost two years after the Paris attacks when three suicide bombers hit the Stade de France before France played Germany.
"Blowing up a building in a chic neighbourhood shows that no one is safe".
