England Qualify for Russian Federation 2018

Harry Kane turned in a 94th-minute victor as England secured their place at next year's 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation with a decidely limp 1-0 victory over Slovenia on Thursday.

England have qualified for Russian Federation 2018 courtesy of a 1-0 win over Slovenia at Wembley.

It is understood a trip to Holland has also been lined-up in March, with the FA now able to start rubber-stamping tournament preparations that are well under way.

While this did not feel like a particularly positive occasion, Southgate deserves credit for taking the reins in hard circumstances following Sam Allardyce's exit and steering England to the World Cup with a game to spare.

The 24-year-old left it late at Wembley - scoring in stoppage time - but he was unconcerned by the nature of England's progression.

The Three Lions staggered their way through the game against Slovenia, in their penultimate World Cup qualifier, and it didn't exactly set the pulses racing.

Oblak threw the ball to Walker in his haste to launch a counter-attack and the Manchester City full-back broke at speed, putting a fine centre on a plate for Kane to tuck in from close range.

Dele Alli's success in the No. 10 role means he is unlikely to be considered in central midfield, so how does Southgate come up with an answer before the World Cup?

If England were unconvincing before the break they lost all momentum after it. Slovenia's Bojan Jokic met a floated cross with a downward header just after the break which Hart fumbled slightly before smothering.

Chievo attacker Valter Birsa came off the away side's bench in the 55th minute as England continued to struggle, with those inside Wembley showing their displeasure at what was another seriously lacklustre performance.

Slovenia had a half-hearted penalty appeal turned down when Josip Ilicic went down under a challenge from keeper Joe Hart.

But there was nothing Oblak could do about Kane's late victor, the cross from former Spurs team-mate Walker flawless for him to tap in his 14th goal of the season for club and country.

"We've got the players, we've got the capabilities".

It will be the first time Sterling, Rashford and Kane have all played together on the global stage.
