United States Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is expected to visit McMinnville High School on Wednesday, Oct. 11 for a discreetly publicised event.
While test scores among low-income Oregon students were largely disheartening - McMinnville schools shined, The Oregonian/OregonLive recently reported.
"The Secretary requested a visit of McMinnville Schools to learn about the excellent instructional practices making a difference for students", McMinnville Superintendent Maryalice Russell wrote on McMinnville High's Facebook page. Administrators in McMinnville said the stop was added just a few days ago, and details were still being worked out. "Secretary DeVos' visit is meant to provide an opportunity for staff and students to tell their story".
DeVos also plans to visit the nearby Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, where high schoolers often take science courses. The visit is closed to the general public, despite the location being at a public high school. She has drawn controversy, most recently for a policy shifts on how colleges respond to campus sexual assault.
"Secretary DeVos' visit is meant to provide an opportunity for staff and students to tell their story", the notice said.
