Nominees in the first six categories to be announced were named by R&B star Ciara on USA breakfast news show Good Morning America, with further nominations announced on Facebook.

Bruno Mars, Drake and Ed Sheeran led nominations Thursday for the American Music Awards, where for the first time no women were vying for the top prize. Mars will compete against The Chainsmokers, Drake, Lamar and Sheeran.

Alessia Cara, Lady Gaga and Rihanna are nominated for favorite female artist pop/rock.

Drake and Bruno also face each other the Pop/Rock Album of the Year, as his More Life album is up against the R&B crooner's record 24K Magic and The Weeknd's Starboy.

Justin Bieber, Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi received four nominations each, including favorite pop/rock song for their hit collaboration, "Despacito". Nominees for the new artist of the year are James Arthur, Niall Horan, Julia Michaels, Post Malone and Rae Sremmurd.

Drake dominated the American Music Awards nominations previous year, as he earned a record breaking 13 nods, eventually winning three prizes.

The 2017 American Music Awards will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
