Mughal had fled from the building after Purkayastha was found dead. A special Crime Branch team was formed to trace him.

Police inspector Sanjay Nikam, head constable Dayanand Kamble, police naik Sandeep Kamble and constable Sandeep Talekar shuttled between Mumbai, Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi to track Mogul, Hindustan Times reported.

"We were passing through Srinagar and found ourselves in the middle of a riot, where locals were pelting stones at each other". An official said the team moved in prohibited areas around Srinagar to locate Mogul. "All he had to do was shout for help, and the anti-establishment sentiment in the region would have taken care of the rest", said one officer. The case has been transferred to the Nashik police.

According to the police, Mughal told them during questioning that he had applied for parole only to escape and had no plans to return to jail. Sajjad Mughal, alias Pathan, who was sentenced to life term in jail in 2014, left a Nashik prison in March a year ago on the plea that he wanted to visit his unwell mother. Under the supervision of Sanjay Nikumbh, Mughal was arrested on Tuesday morning.

The commissioner said Mughal was picked up from a village near Srinagar where he had gone seeking a job.

Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar told media persons late on Tuesday evening that the investigators notched success after painstaking investigations and human intelligence to arrest the absconder-convict after more than a year.

The Crime Branch team, which reached Gagangir a week ago after receiving a tip-off about Mughal working there, kept a daily watch on the site to identify him. "One of the sources eventually tipped them off about Mughal". As soon as he was far enough from the others, we closed in on him. The Nashik police had registered a case against Mughal under Section 224 of the Indian Penal Code for breaching his parole norms. Mughal worked as a watchman in the building and had used a stolen key to sneak into her apartment; he tried to rape her and when she fought back, he stabbed her repeatedly.
