Rafael Nadal to skip ATP 500 event in Basel

"I don't want to talk about that [the knee strapping] now, sorry", Nadal told reporters in his post-match press conference.

Nadal, victor of the US Open and China Open, saved the first break point but could not survive the second as Federer surged to a second Shanghai Masters crown. I am not anxious, though.

"I mean, I don't even know what it takes to be honest [to become world No. 1]", he told Sky Sports after beating his long-time rival.

'I don't know about Basel.

If Federer wins also in Paris and London, Nadal would need to earn 1,041 between these two events to be at the top of the rankings: he would reach Paris final and winning three Round Robin matches in London or winning one-two RR matches plus the semifinal.

It was his fourth win of the year against Nadal and his fifth in succession over the Spaniard. In the fifth game, Roger made the break and without much difficulty brought the finals to the winning point.

The five-time grand slam champion looked exhausted and committed several unforced errors in the first-round match as she was cheered on by a large crowd cheered who chanted "Masha!"

The Swiss Indoors in Basel was viewed as a big event as it is played in the home country of second-seeded Roger Federer.

'It's a wild thought, that's why I'm not even thinking about it to be quite honest at this point.

He was sporting a bandage on his right knee during the match before having discussions with his medical team about the risks of playing back-to-back tournaments in the next few weeks.

"We are happy because he returned to the tour winning in Beijing and getting to the final in Shanghai and normally he has not achieved good results in this part of the year".
