The incident happened on Monday when the Kochi to Mumbai Jet Airways flight was scheduled to take off at 12.05 pm, but it got delayed after the hijack and bomb threat.
On November 7, the NIA said that it had taken over the case wherein Jet Airways Mumbai-Delhi flight was diverted to Ahmedabad on October 30 following a security threat.
A ministry official today said the case against the individual has been registered under the amended Anti- Hijacking Act and is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
According to sources, the two passengers have been detained at Cochin airport.
The note, allegedly placed by Mumbai-based Gujarati jeweller Birju Kishore Salla, stated that there were hijackers and a bomb in the cargo area, officials had said. The ground staff, who overheard the "happy bomb" talk, informed the supervisory officers who in turn informed the CISF and the domestic terminal manager, the Press Trust of India reported. Subsequently, Varghese was offloaded and his baggage was checked thoroughly.
Varghese along with a person accompanying him was handed over to the police.
Varghese's friend was not allowed to travel in the aircraft, the official said, adding that he was also taken into custody for questioning. "Jet Airways flight 9W 825 Cochin - Mumbai was rescheduled to depart Cochin at 1402 hrs., with a delay of 2 hours on account of a security related matter", the statement read.
