HTC Finally Announces Vive Focus Standalone VR Headset

So when developers port their VR content to Vive Wave, they can choose to adopt 3DoF hand input or keep 6DoF by using additional accessories. Choice is great, of course, but when each device has its own content platform, it's hard for developers to support all systems, paving the way for one platform to dominate. This unit aims to offer a different kind of VR solution. Therefore it seems likely that those companies intent to integrate Vive Wave into their hardware. Alongside that reveal was the news that it would be supported by a new open platform called Vive Wave.

The VR headset is also optimized by Vive Wave VR open platform where developers can add VR-ready content.

HTC Vive report it is concerned by the continuing fragmentation of the VR market, particularly in China. By eliminating both the PC and the phone requirements, users aren't dependent on any other device for their VR experiences. The VR headset is exclusive for the Chinese market only but its availability and pricing details haven't been announced. Over the summer, HTC announced that it would release a Snapdragon 835-powered VR HMD for China that would mirror the specifications of the standalone Daydream headset HTC is building for the global market.

Going back to the Focus, one potential use case that intrigued me the most is that it can be hooked up to other HTC headsets - be it the Focus or even the original Vive - for social interaction.

"As the world continues to become more mobile and connected, we've been working closely with Vive through our HMD Accelerator Program and advanced VR software features to enable immersive virtual reality experiences without the need for wires or PCs", said Hugo Swart, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. It also packs a high resolution AMOLED display, although HTC has been rather light on the details of what this is about.

Predictably, the Vive Focus headset is fully compatible with the Vive Wave open platform and Viveport content distribution system.
