Cahill keen to avoid Barca and PSG in draw for knockout stage

Said the Argentinian, who led the team to two of the last four Champions League finals: "I wouldn't say it's a failure".

One of the advantages of winning your Champions League group is that this guarantees that a team will not have to play one of the other seven sides who topped their group too.

Group runners-up: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Chelsea, Sevilla, Shakhtar, Porto, Basel.

CSKA drop into the Europa League, while FC Basel reached the last 16 after beating Benfica 2-0 in Lisbon courtesy of goals from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Dimitri Oberlin.

Captain Gary Cahill has admitted Chelsea would rather avoid Barcelona and Paris St Germain in the first knock-out round of the Champions League.

Are there any other restrictions?

Both clubs would prefer to play weaker teams in the next stage of the competition and if Liverpool fail to win against Spartak tonight either the Russians or Sevilla could become possible opponents for Chelsea in the last 16 stage.

The fact that they can not play Real Madrid again in the next round probably gives them the most favourable list of potential opponents.

If Liverpool do secure top spot that makes things even trickier for Chelsea. We know PSG and Barcelona are very good but we are Chelsea so we have to be ready for everything.

Barca could draw Bayern, Porto, Shakhtar or Basel as well as Chelsea, but a 44% probability is incredibly high for a draw of this nature.

Liverpool (if top): Bayern Munich, Juventus, Basel, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli, Porto or RB Leipzig.

"We have to show to deserve to go through to the next round in the Champions League".

When is the draw and when are the games?

English teams will not be able to be meet in Monday's draw, under UEFA regulations. Chelsea were through to the knockout stages, but blew their chance to finish in first place and earn an easier draw.
