The fast-moving Thomas fire engulfed an downtown Ventura entire apartment complex in flames on Tuesday, December 5.
Evacuations have been ordered for areas near Carpinteria and Ojai.
"This is good news for the fire crews as the winds will not be driven quite as vigorously", a weather service statement said.
By 1:15 a.m., firefighters reported the fire had burned into a refinery near La Conchita and was within 10 yards of homes in that community, where a mandatory evacuation was already underway. Also, the Magic Mountain amusement park did not seem to be threatened, but it's the best-known landmark in the area.
In the last official tweet of Venture County Fire, it says "Extreme Fire weather continues in Ventura County through Thurs".
The Thomas Fire has expanded to 65,000 acres and still has zero percent containment as the blaze continues to rage Wednesday.
Back in the beachside city of Ventura, the fire killed more than two dozen horses at a stable and had destroyed at least 150 structures, a number that was expected to get far bigger as firefighters are able to assess losses.
That fire has now reached 96,000 acres, and officials fear the worst wind day so far this week in Southern California as the region battles major brushfires, scorching nearly 120,000 acres altogether.
In Los Angeles, the Burning index rating, a daily reading of fire danger, is now at 296, according to fire officials, a record.
