Prime minister Narendra Modi has spoken to the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, assuring him of support operations including necessary funds, according to local media.

Cyclone Ockhi is now moving towards the coasts of Gujarat and Maharashtra said the Indian Meteorological Department while issuing a "very severe cyclonic storm" warning and advising fishermen not to venture into the sea.

Dr K Satyagopal, the Relief Commissioner of Tamil Nadu said, "We are awaiting the exact list of fishermen cited in Lakshadweep".

Twentynine relief camps have been set up to accommodate those marooned in coastal areas.

In Lakshadweep, 31 relief camps have been opened in the 10 inhabited islands.

In the last 24 hours, many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have witnessed rains, the Regional Meteorological Centre here said.

Coconut trees have been uprooted at various places and houses damaged in eastern Kalpeni and Minicoy, sources said, adding the extent of the damage was being assessed.

Vijayan said so far 393 people from Kerala have been rescued.

Singh assured the AIADMK leader that the Centre would provide the assistance required to rescue the fishermen, it said.

The Indian Coast Guard on Saturday informed that the cyclone Ockhi, which has originated from Kanyakumari on November 29, has moved towards Lakshadweep islands and has intensified into "severe cyclonic storm" with wind reaching up to speed of 60 to 70 km.

"It is very likely to become a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood during the next 36 hours". The ship had earlier found another body, a defence spokesperson said.

India's Coast Guard and Navy have rescued around 223 fishermen and evacuated thousands of people from cyclone hit areas, officials said, as they continued their operations.

The state chief minister met some injured fishermen, who were rescued from the choppy waters, at the medical college hospital in Thiruvanathapuram and enquired about their well- being.
