A Washington State official confirmed to KREM2 that junior wide receiver Tavares Martin Jr. has been dismissed from the team for violating team rules. He then said coach Mike Leach was restricting his transfer, and wondered why Leach was so protective of where he could transfer while interviewing at Tennessee.
This news comes days after Martin, Jr's high school teammate, sophomore receiver Isaiah Johnson-Mack, requested his transfer from the program to be closer to home and his two children.
Washington State takes on Michigan State for the Holiday Bowl with a depleted receiving group on December 28. Citing anonymous sources, the Seattle Times reported Martin, Jr. was cut after multiple violations of team rules. Martin led the Cougars with 70 receptions and nine touchdowns during the regular season as Washington State went 9-3 and earned a spot in the Holiday Bowl.
Mack expressed a desire to leave WSU and transfer to another school on November 30 over Twitter citing "personal reasons" and wanting to play football "at a school closer to home".
Johnson-Mack has 60 catches.
