Chris Holtmann is building Ohio State basketball into victor

With a flawless 4-0 record in the Big Ten, including beating the Spartans, who are arguably the conference's best team, Ohio State has already had quite a season.

Perhaps the surprise of the Big Ten thus far, new coach Chris Holtmann has his Buckeyes out to a 4-0 jump in league play with wins over MSU, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa. He had just three points and one field goal attempt, which came with nine minutes left in the first half when he smashed into Ohio State's Kaleb Wesson and sent a shot off of the top of the backboard.

Meanwhile, Michigan beat IL 79-69 on Saturday for its seventh straight win. It was its lowest output of the season, one game it scored 27.

"They hit a lot of tough buckets", Winston said.

"They doubled after he touched it", Izzo said. The Spartans entered the game looking practically unbeatable, but Keita Bates-Diop and company had little trouble vs. Tom Izzo's crew. Additionally, his 32 points against the top-ranked Spartans showcased the junior's ability to dominate against top-NBA-Draft-pick-to-be, Miles Bridges. "We didn't play very well in the first half, they didn't play great in the first half". "We have good things going on".

Ohio State's 80-64 rout of the visiting Spartans didn't merely highlight the remarkable job new coach Chris Holtmann has done developing the unheralded collection of players he inherited from Thad Matta this summer.

Washington and Lee 101, Bridgewater 89: Roy McMillan did a bit of everything, recording 22 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, a career-high four blocks and two steals, to propel the Generals to a victory over the visiting Eagles, snapping Bridgewater's six-game winning streak.

Kam Williams opened up the second half with a dunk, and the Buckeyes never trailed again.

In its first road game as the No. 1 team in the country, Michigan State encountered a strong effort from a surging Buckeyes team and faltered in the face of it.

Ohio State last beat the No. 1 team in the country in 2007, when the then-No. Michigan State will surrender the top ranking, likely to No. 3 Villanova after No. 2 Duke lost on Saturday night. The whole second half felt the way Ohio State basketball used to feel, when the Buckeyes routinely made Sweet 16s.

Ohio State The Buckeyes made the most of their momentum and played solid defense to pull off the upset. We didn't come to a visiting game with a lack of focus.

"I understand what a moment like this can mean for our university when a program like ours is being successful, how much pride our fan base takes in it, but we've got a long way to go", he said. "This is the start of it".

Ohio State's 19-4 run starting with 4:36 left included a pair of free throws by Bates-Diop after Izzo received a technical foul for demonstratively taking issue with an official's call. I thought it was good the way they battled, and that's something we can build on.

"I took the wind out of their sail", Izzo said. "When the head dies, the body goes".
