MSNBC's "Hardball" host Chris Matthews joked about drugging then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton before sitting down with her for an interview in early 2016, according to exclusive outtake footage published by NY magazine's The Cut Friday.
The footage, unearthed by The Cut, shows Matthews preparing to interview Clinton during the presidential campaign in late 2016.
In a statement to The Cut, Matthews apologized for the video, saying it was a "terrible comment". He said, "I deeply regret it and I'm sorry".
Before interviewing the candidate, Matthews made a comment about giving her a "Bill Cosby pill". Cosby has been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women, including allegations that he drugged women to sexually assault them. "Precious waters?" Matthews can be heard asking an assistant. "As I recall he got pretty angry with her after she challenged him during foreign policy section", Palmieri tweeted.
TheCut added that Matthews "has a long history of talking disparagingly about Hillary Clinton".
Prior to their chat at an Iowa fire station, Matthews was recorded joking about in a way that made light of both Clinton and sexual assault. He pinched her cheek after an interview in 2008, and suggested that her political career had been advanced because her husband had "messed around".
"That's how she got to be senator from New York", Matthews said at the time.
In May 2016, Matthews was caught on a live microphone making comments about Melania Trump during then-presidential candidate Donald Trump's primary victory speech in Indiana.
In Decemeber, the Daily Caller reported a former MSNBC employee received separation-related compensation after lodging a complaint against Matthews in 1999.
