This move lowers the U.S. Sam's Club store count to 597.
The changes were made after a recent performance review, according to the company.
Sam's Club will close one of its stores on San Antonio's North Side amid a wave of national closures for the retailer, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.
The Sam's Club location at 12919 San Pedro Ave.in San Antonio (not pictured) will permanently close January 26, Walmart spokeswoman Anne Hatfield said.
Fees to join Sam's Club run from $45-$100 a year.
"There were a few locations where we felt there was no easy way to keep them open", he said, adding that some of the stores will remain open for a few weeks. The two other Houston-area Clubs closing are located at 1615 South Loop East and 13331 Westheimer in the Eldridge Parking shopping center. Some reported that bewildered employees showed up to work to find out they no longer had a job. Others received a FedEx letter that contained information about the store closure.
Walmart now has two ECommerce hubs in the USA - in Fort Worth, Texas, and Swedesboro, N.J. - supporting all of its online sales, according to Hatfield. Up to a dozen stores will be retrofitted into e-commerce fulfillment centers.
Walmart just announced that it plans to hand out thousands of pink slips across its corporate office, as well as at store-level.
When asked about the workers who will lose their jobs as a result of the Sam's Club closures, however, Mnuchin responded: "Different companies will do different things".
The restructuring comes the day after Walmart announced it will raise its starting hourly wages to $11, expand parental leave benefits, and give cash bonuses to employees of up to $1,000.
"Right now that's what the customer wants", she said.
