Australia bans sexual relations between government ministers and staff

Postado Fevereiro 15, 2018

Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce is perhaps best known for the Pistol and Boo affair - when he threatened actor Johnny Depp with perjury over bringing his dogs into the country illegally.

"Barnaby made a shocking error of judgement in having an affair with a young woman working in his office", he said.

Late Thursday, Turnbull announced that ministers "regardless of whether they are married or single, must not engage in sexual relations with staff". "But, we must recognize that whatever may have been acceptable or to which a blind eye was turned in the past, today, in 2018, it is not acceptable for a minister to have a sexual relationship with somebody who works for them", the Prime Minister said.

At this stage, Mr Joyce's lover and former staffer Vikki Campion was around five months pregnant with their child and his 24-year marriage had broken down.

Mr Turnbull said the events of this week had revealed "some very serious issues about the culture of this place".

"It's been an extraordinarily hard time for the. party and clearly for Barnaby Joyce and his family and for the government", Anthony told reporters.

- Joyce and Campion live rent-free in an Armidale town house.

Turnbull said earlier Joyce would take a week's break next week, which avoids the need for him to fill in as acting prime minister during the PM's scheduled visit to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington next week.

The PM said the changes to the code of conduct, dubbed the #bonkban on social media, will take effect immediately.

"I'm asking Senator McKim: does he want to talk about office relationships and the conflicts that come with it while you're a member of parliament?", O'Sullivan said.

Labor senator Kimberley Kitching on Wednesday tabled a notice of motion calling for the details of Mr Joyce and Ms Campion's "special goal travel" and any global flights.

"Doesn't the prime minister's announcement just before Question Time about the arrangements of who will be acting prime minister confirm that the deputy prime minister can not do his job?" asked / shouted Bill Shorten during Question Time. "Or are we simply meant to believe it's all a big coincidence?". Campion was a senior media adviser, and she became the second media adviser in Drum's office. Under ministerial standards, ministers "must not seek or encourage any form of gift in their personal capacity". When she worked in Matt Canavan's office, she was not my partner.

It then revealed that Mr Joyce hosted a Department of Agriculture dinner at the Quality Hotel Powerhouse in Armidale, owned by Mr Maguire.
