The heat of the Punjab National Bank fraud has now reached Arun Jaitley's home with Congress President Rahul Gandhi accusing the Finance Minister's lawyer daughter of being paid "a large retainer" by the accused.
The Congress chief also tagged an article by The Wire, a multimedia news portal, in this regard.
Firing salvos at Jaitley, Rahul tweeted, "It's now revealed that our FM's silence on the PNB SCAM was to protect his lawyer daughter, who was paid a large retainer by the accused just a month before the SCAM became public".
However, the firm terminated their retainership and refunded the entire amount to the company after reports about the latter's alleged involvement in the PNB scam surfaced. "When other law firms of the accused have been raided by the CBI, why not hers", citing a report by the Wire.
As per reports, Arun Jaitley's daughter's firm, Chambers of Jaitley and Bakshi, was engaged with Mehul Choksi's Geetanjali Gems Ltd in December 2017 on a retainership contract.
Rahul Gandhi in his tweet about "other law firms" was referring to the searches carried out by the CBI at the Mumbai offices of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas-a leading law firm which was reportedly hired by the key accused Nirav Modi around a month before the scam broke in mid-February.
While the Congress has been targeting the Modi government for "allowing" diamond merchants Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi to "flee" the country, the BJP has hit back claiming that the scam has its origins in the UPA government.
The CBI had filed the first FIR in the scam on February 14 against Nirav Modi, his wife Ami, brother Nishal, Choksi and his firms Diamond R US, Solar Exports and Stellar Diamond.
