Central Intelligence Agency chief Pompeo to replace Tillerson as Secretary of State

President Trump has removed Rex Tillerson as his Secretary of State, replacing him with Central Intelligence Agency head Mike Pompeo.

Mr Trump tweeted that Mr Pompeo, "will do a fantastic job!" and thanked Mr Tillerson for his service. He added, "I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

Gina Haspel, the deputy director of the CIA, will replace Pompeo if confirmed by the Senate, becoming the first female director of that agency. "Congratulations to all!" President Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. "He will continue our program of restoring America's standing in the world, strengthening our alliances, confronting our adversaries, and seeking the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

Tillerson is the latest high-ranking official in the Trump administration to resign. Last week, Trump's chief economic advisor Gary Cohn resigned after the president announced he would impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

Mr Trump last Friday asked Mr Tillerson to step aside, and the embattled top diplomat cut short his trip to Africa on Monday to return to Washington. The secretary has generally been cut out of the loop on major foreign policy moves, like Trump's impulsive decision to meet with Kim Jong-un. Mike and Gina have worked together for more than a year, and have developed a great mutual respect.

He went on to reveal he had appointed Gina Haspel as Mr Pompeo's successor, the first woman to take on the prestigious position.
