Rejected: Notre Dame Left Out of NCAA Tournament, NIT Bound

The victor faces either No. 4 Penn State or No. 5 Temple in the second round.

With another NCAA Tournament bid off the table, Notre Dame is headed to the NIT as a #1 seed where they will face off against Hampton Tuesday at 9:00 on ESPN at Purcell Pavillion. Last year, Notre Dame advanced to the second round before running up against West Virginia.

"Like every year, this was an extremely challenging process but we are extremely excited about the field we were able to put together", said Reggie Minton, chair of the NIT Selection Committee. "They just didn't have enough on their resume to be in as an at-large".

NCAA Selection Committee Bruce Rasmussen stated following the release of the bracket that Davidson's win over Rhode Island in the A-10 Tournament title knocked the Irish out of the NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Texas, Alabama, USC and UCLA - all considered bubble teams heading into postseason play - all won at least one game in their conference tournaments. The Irish and Pirates will be meeting for the first time in men's basketball on Tuesday night (Notre Dame is 5-0 all-time against teams from the MEAC).

Notre Dame played the majority of its ACC season without pre-season All American Bonzie Colson who had surgery on his foot in January and missed 15 games before returning for the final two games of the regular season and the ACC Tournament. Only three of the teams in the 2018 field appeared in the NIT in 2017. Senior guard Matt Farrell also was sidelined for five games with an ankle injury.

Baylor (18-14) and Saint Mary's (28-5) round out the No. 1 seeds.

By the way, remember when Notre Dame beat Syracuse on their own court without their best two players and then Syracuse got in over the Irish? The first round starts on Tuesday.

"We held a team meeting and discussed where we wanted to take the future of this team", senior forward Martinas Geben said. The semifinal and championship games will be played at New York's historic Madison Square Garden for the 81st year. I think neither one of us are very happy with how things ended in Brooklyn. They really weren't interested, it was really a tough end to a season.

Notre Dame is making its 13th appearance in the NIT.

As a junior, when he was the only ACC player to average a double-double, Colson was named to the Associated Press All-American Third Team, All-ACC First Team, ACC All-Tournament First Team and was a finalist for the Karl Malone and Wooden Awards.
