Republican Representative Mike Rogers told a February 28 conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies that a separate space corps could be carved out from the air force within "three to five years".
Donald Trump has proposed a new brand of armed forces - which he's dubbed the "space force".
Trump was speaking Tuesday about his administration's investments in space exploration to members of the military when he said that space is becoming a "war-fighting domain". "We may even have a "space force"-develop another one-space force". We'll call it the space force.' Not really serious. "It's like the Army and the Navy, but for space, because we're spending a lot of money on space".
Mr Trump, who earlier fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, said he'd originally coined the term "Space Force" as a joke while discussing USA government spending, and private investment, in space.
The President said the idea of an out-of-this-world battle squad started as a joke, before he warmed to the idea.
Trump told the audience: "From the very beginning, many of our astronauts have been soldiers and air men, coast guard men and marines. Maybe we'll have to do that.' That could happen".
No wars have been fought in space to date, but if Trump's presidency has taught us anything, we know to expect the unexpected.
Trump explained the etymology of his new branch of the military after he realized he could put a word in front of "force" and make it sound very good and very official. Also known as Space Marines.
