Conchita Wurst has revealed she is HIV positive in a public statement to fans.
Pop recording artist Conchita Wurst arrives for the awards ceremony of the 67th Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany February 18, 2017.
"I will not give anyone the right to frighten me and influence my life", she wrote on Instagram.
She was later invited to perform at the United Nations and hailed by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for fighting discrimination.
Wurst revealed that regular treatment had suppressed the virus.
"Since I received the diagnosis, I am in medical treatment, and for many years without interruption under the detection limit, so that so not able to pass on the virus". Moreover, it could no longer be detected in her blood and could not be passed on. I hope to build up courage and take another step against the stigmatization of people who have become infected by HIV, either through their own behaviour or through no fault of their own.
"The decision to talk openly about your HIV status should be a personal one and not taken away or ever, ever used as a threat", chief executive Ian Green said. What other health condition would be used as blackmail against someone?
"Conchita has done so much good since winning Eurovision four years ago, and has shown her strength of character once again in her handling of this situation".
