CM Mehbooba has written to the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, seeking a fast track court hearing for the Kathua case, so as to conclude the trial within 90 days, for the case that has caused nationwide outrage.
Later, during investigation, the police arrested the caretaker and alleged that he was the mastermind of kidnapping, rape and killing of the girl from a nomadic tribe with an ulterior motive of terrifying the community and driving them out of the village.
Mehbooba Mufti is in Srinagar to meet party legislators and senior ministers to discuss the future course of action on the case.
Citing the case of her daughter, who was gang-raped and murdered her over five years ago, Devi said despite the conviction of the culprits, the same has still not been hanged.
As a effect of the Kathua rape case, both the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government will soon put in place a comprehensive plan to provide adequate security cover to nomadic tribes, specially those belonging to the minority community, whenever they are camping in the Jammu region. "The youth here have given enough indication of their anger and discontent over the past several years, even while they gave a chance for democracy to play itself out", she said. The girl's family has now chose to ask the Supreme Court to transfer the trial to another state.
In connection with the case, two FIRs have been filed: one against eight people for allegedly being involved in the crime and another has been filed against a group of lawyers who had allegedly stopped the police from filing chargesheet against the eight accused.
In Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow, social activists, theatre artistes, students and volunteers gathered at the Gandhi statue near the general post office (GPO) on Sunday evening demanding justice in the Unnao and Kathua rape cases. The Kathua rape-murder case triggered massive controversy after the incident became heavily politicised.
Police said they have taken cognizance of Hussain's complaint and started investigations.
The innocent girl was brutally raped and murdered but the accused detained by Crime Branch a few days back. "We have made a request and issued a direction to them to convene an extra-ordinary meeting tomorrow to decide on the issue", he said.
"We have many festering wounds which need to be addressed with compassion and care". "There are people in some parts of the country who are overtly supporting the accused or are somehow silent about it because they feel they will incriminate some larger ideology".
