Putin says Russian warships permanently on duty in Mediterranean

Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a meeting with major foreign investors on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), acting presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

"This year. due to the continuing terrorist threat in Syria, our ships equipped with cruise missiles will patrol the Mediterranean on a continuous basis", Putin said during a meeting with military leaders in the southern Russian city of Sochi.

Russian troops have been participating in the fight against the Islamic State and insurgent groups in Syria since September 2015 at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"Due to the remaining threat of incursions by worldwide terrorists in Syria, our ships carrying Kalibr cruise missiles will be constantly deployed in the Mediterranean Sea", Putin said at a military meeting.

Russian Federation will strengthen the naval component of its strategic nuclear forces and increase the role of the Navy in ensuring nuclear deterrence, he said.
