Spike Lee blasts Trump for not condemning the Klan and Alt-Right

In a passionate, expletive-ridden monologue at the Cannes Film Festival, director Spike Lee lambasted Donald Trump for the USA president's response to last year's violent white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia.

"That motherfucker did not denounce the motherfucking clan, the alt-right, and those Nazis", Lee continued.

In the aftermath of the August 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump notably addressed Americans, saying he saw "very fine people on both sides".

"That motherf***er was given a chance to say "We are about love and not hate", he said.

"It was a defining moment and he could have said to the United States and the world that we're better than that", said Lee.

It just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where the audience gave it a six-minute standing ovation.

The film has a cast that includes John David Washington (son of Denzel) and Star Wars' Adam Driver.

The film ends with footage from the protests in Charlottesville, where a woman was killed after a man plowed his auto into a crowd of counter-protesters during the "Unite the Right" rally.

Lee criticized Trump's response to a white nationalist rally Charlottesville, Va. last summer, and reportedly referred to the president as a "mother--".

Before inserting footage of the vehicle that ploughed through crowds in Virginia, killing counter-protester Heather Heyer, Mr Lee said he telephoned Heyer's mother. The final image is an upside-down American flag that fades to black and white.

"I was not going to put that murder scene in the film without her blessing", said Mr Lee.

Lee also noted that the racism depicted in his new film is not unique to the United States, but an issue that plagues the whole world. Now we have our first look at how these events will unfold under Lee's cinematic supervision thanks to the first BlacKkKlansman trailer.

"This right -wing (expletive) is not just America. It's not a black, white, or brown [problem], it's everybody", he said. "And we have to wake up", said Mr Lee.

I think I count seven "motherfuckers".
