Yet after leaving the summit, Trump tweeted that he would instruct US officials not to endorse the G-7 statement, after objecting to comments from summit host Trudeau. Photographs from the Group of Seven summit provided by the German and American governments suggest contrasting images of their leaders.
Earlier on Saturday, Trump told reporters it would be "very easy" to make the case for tariffs on auto imports using the rationale that they threaten national security.
An official White House photograph from the summit shows Trump holding forth as Merkel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan listen.
His comments were reported by CTV.
A G7 summit dominated by disagreement over trade between the United States and its key allies has failed to deliver a breakthrough as the meeting enters its second and final day.
US President Donald Trump proposed the complete elimination of all barriers to global trade at a Group of Seven summit, a move that turns the tables on allies who accuse the US of wielding protectionist policies.
At what a French described as one "extraordinary" session on Friday, leaders who had vowed to confront Trump over his decision to impose tariffs on USA allies last week as part of his "America First" agenda, showered Trump with data one after the other.
There was also an agreement to disagree on climate change in the wake of Trump's decision to leave the Paris climate accord previous year which further underlined the divide between the Group of Seven's powerhouse and its six co-members.
"You want a tariff-free - you want no barriers, and you want no subsidies", he said.
"This isn't just G7". The US isn't expected to join separate agreements for cleaner oceans or combating climate change, which the other six nations will sign, Merkel said. And we charge nothing, ' Trump said. "And it's going to stop". "It's going to stop or we'll stop trading with them", he declared.
He said he would know within the first minute if Kim was serious about denuclearization and if he wasn't serious he would walk out of the meeting. Trudeau rejected the idea.
Trump's presidency has been clouded by a federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by his campaign. "And that's a very profitable answer, if we have to do it", Mr Trump said, adding: "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing and that ends".
This, he suggested, could involve 'a check in and a renewal'. "Everyone agreed, including President Trump", the official said on Friday, without elaborating. "And that ends." - Trump insists that the current status quo on trade can not be allowed to continue.
The statement comes just a few weeks after Trump chose to impose large tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada, and Mexico and a few months after Trump hit the rest of the world with the same tariffs. China has vowed to retaliate in equal measure.
