Murray Relay For Life kicks off tonight

Postado Junho 10, 2018

"Relay for Life is a great event for everybody because it involves the whole community".

Some things old and some things new have been planned for the 2018 Relay For Life of Upper Illinois Valley.

This year, 415 Relay for Life events are scheduled nationwide, with over 110,000 participants. More than 500 Luminaria have been dedicated this year.

There were also zany events like Mr. Relay, where guys were made to look "fabulous" and competed to see who could collect the most money for the American Cancer Society. That special luncheon will take place at Newtown High School at 3 pm on Saturday, June 16. "We're calling it "Cafeteria For the Cure" and Olive Garden will cater the dinner", Kofoid noted.

Three years later, Matthew is cancer-free and in recognition of his strength and determination, he is now the face of Hervey Bay's 2018 Relay for Life.

"We're ready to go", organizing committee chairwoman Laura Ashley Farrow said. Relay teams will set up their camps in the MHS gym and down the adjacent hallways.

Friday night's opening ceremony kicked off with a survivor celebration featuring all registered survivors providing their names and the number of years they've survived. "I was starting to lose my hair, I remember ... and I swore up and down, 'I'm going to be one of those purple shirt ladies or men'". For the next lap, the survivors will be joined by their supporters for the Caregivers' Lap, and then a Team Captains Lap will follow.

Kofoid noted that people who purchase bags may also send pictures. We were getting messages like on Facebook telling us that they kept us in their prayers. What started out as one event has greatly expanded and has been an annual event here in Minot for over 20 years.

Past year alone, the lodge has hosted 32 patients and guests from the county, whom stayed 218 nights total.

"I love to walk in the community, love it, and I always wanted to combine walking with a charity, meeting people", Silipigni said of his thoughts when he first heard about Relay for Life. "It was supposed to go an hour and it went nearly double that - luckily we had enough desserts". In 2016, the local committee chose to move from the overnight format to a six-hour format, running from 6 p.m.to midnight. Her coworker, Yancey, came out with her in support as part of her relay team. Thanks to a donation from Starved Rock Wood Products, the team is holding a kitchen cabinet raffle. During the Fight Back Ceremony, each participated was reminded of their commitment to helping their community fight cancer which brought them to the relay. Not only did she reach her goal, but she doubled it, raising $1,150. "They will go anywhere the victor is located, even out of state".

At the west end of the Relay track, the Garden of Hope will have Caregiver Pinwheels and the Torches of Hope. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Relay on July 14.

By joining the Relay For Life event, you can help attack cancer from every angle.

The silent auction winds up at 9 p.m., as the lighting of the luminarias begins, along with a Relay for Relay. "I'm very lucky because not a lot of people get to do a job they're passionate about", Carey said. "I never felt as lost or as broken as I did in those few moments until the realization hit that me that my parents were most likely feeling worse", she told the crowd. People walk laps through the night to raise money for the American Cancer Society. But she said watching someone go through cancer was nothing like going through it yourself. "When you put some makeup on and you're giggling with other women, it's a bonding experience".

"When the ones you love are diagnosed with or die from cancer, friends and family often want to do something to help or remember them".
