A citizen recorded cell phone video that shows Memphis grandmother Leimome Cheeks opening the trunk of her Ford Explorer and letting a child out of dog kennel. They said they had charged Cheeks with two counts of Child Endangerment.
Neighbors of Cheeks expressed their shock after learning about the incident. "I couldn't see her actually doing that", said Skylarr Blake, who lives doors down from Cheeks.
Other residents called the grandmother, who cares for two puppies, a woman of strong faith. She's such a nice lady. The attention grew so rabid that the Memphis Police Department issued a statement on Facebook saying they had been contacted by many people since the video went viral on social media. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", one neighbor said.
"I think she needs some help. For them to be in the hot vehicle like that in cages is sad", neighbor Nikita Blake said.
"I mean it could be an honest mistake".
'Cheeks further advised they also drove downtown, however she checked on the children periodically and later removed them from the kennel and put them in the rear seats of her her vehicle'.
"You looking at that video, you see she opened up the cage let the kids out the cage out the trunk of the auto, I mean it don't look good", Blake said.
There were no air-conditioning vents in the back of the vehicle and the children told police they became hot.
The victims were 7 and 8 years old.
Cheeks is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.
