As the celebrity chef's legal next of kin, Ottavia Busia-Bourdain is in charge of decision-making, including over his remains which have been in Kayserberg-Vignobles, France since his suicide death last Friday.

Bourdain's ex-wife, Ottavia Busia, shared a photo on Instagram of their child, Ariane, appearing on stage at a music venue in NY. "She was wonderful. So strong and fearless. She wore the boots you bought her", she said, referring to the profusely studded, knee-high footwear.

She ended the note with a heartbreaking farewell to Bourdain: "I hope you are having a good trip, wherever you are". Even after the couple split, the family remained exceptionally close, with Bourdain often posting pictures of him with Ottavia and Ariane, though he often hid his daughter's face in an effort to protect her from the spotlight he occupied so effortlessly.

Since splitting with Busia in 2016, Bourdain had been dating Italian actress Asia Argento for the past year. Bourdain fan Tanner Palin even started an online petition asking Netflix to extend the series.

He was discovered in his hotel on Friday 9 June by friend Eric Ripert.

Actress Rose McGowan is reportedly said to be comforting Bourdain's girlfriend, Asia Argento, in Rome.

Bourdain himself had documented his own history of suicidal thinking and self-destructive behavior in his books and in interviews.

In the lengthy letter received by The Hollywood reporter, McGowan, 44, revealed she was in the presence of Argento, 42, who Bourdain, 61, supported when she spoke out about Hollywood sex pest Harvey Weinstein as part of the Me Too campaign.

Bourdain's mother has said funeral arrangements have been put on hold until authorities in France allow his body to be flown home. After she posted a statement on Instagram Friday, calling him "my love, my rock, my protector", she was photographed leaving her home over the weekend with one of her two children. "My love & prayers are also w his family, friends and loved ones".

President Obama, who made a guest appearance on "Parts Unknown" in 2016, tweeted a touching photo and memory of Bourdain.
