Ireland boxing club shooting victim's funeral held, gunman still at large

Postado Junho 13, 2018

Members from Mr Messett's beloved Glencormac United soccer club and Bray Wheelers Cycling Club formed guards of honour and helped carry his body through the sunshine of the flawless summer's day to remember him before he was laid to rest.

'Everyone who knew my dad Bobby knew that he was one of a kind.

"First and foremost, I would like to wish my most heartfelt condolences to the family of Bobby Messett for their tragic loss".

'Although we are all devastated that he was taken so cruelly and way too soon, it gives us some comfort to know that he is reunited with his ma and da, '.

"My da never sat still for a minute". He loved to keep busy, and he did just that. "He has left a huge void in our lives that will never be filled again".

To reflect his love of sport, gifts brought to the altar included his Glencormac United jersey, a Liverpool crest, golf balls, a picture of his pigeons, his boxing gloves and cycling helmet.

Fr Dan Nguyen prayed not only for Mr Messett, but for the other victims of the attack: boxing trainer Peter Taylor, the father of Olympic gold medallist Katie, and Ian Britton. Mr Taylor remained in hospital yesterday recovering from gunshot wounds to the arm and chest. So many turned up to pay tribute that the majority had to remain outside in the church grounds listening on a loudspeaker system.

"Bobby was kind, warm, friendly, gentle, hard-working and well respected".

There was also a photo of Mr Messett's three grandchildren, as well as a bottle of rum to "send him on his way".

Other mourners included former Ireland global Damien Duff.

Father-of-three Bobby Messett, 50, died while Pete Taylor, 57, sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries in the shooting at the gym he owns near Dublin.

'I understand there is still a lot of uncertainty about the nature of the incident but I'm hoping the gardaí will get to the bottom of it very soon.

"As many of you know, I have been somewhat estranged from my Dad for a number of years now".

On Thursday night, Katie Taylor issued a statement in which she said she had had little contact with her father in the last three years and no contact or association whatsoever with Bray Boxing Club since 2015. I urge the media to leave me, my Mum and other family members out of this story.
