Facebook Zsa Zsa, the World's Ugliest Dog, tragically passed away just days after winning her esteemed title, her devastated owner confirmed Tuesday afternoon. The American Kennel Club said her breed typically lives eight to 10 years Zsa Zsa was 9.

The victor of this year's World's Ugliest Dog Contest had always been a fighter; Zsa Zsa spent her first five years of life in a puppy mill in Missouri before she was saved by the nonprofit Underdog Rescue.

The nine-year-old English bulldog, whose lolling tongue and crooked underbite made her the victor back in June, died in her sleep, the post said.

"She knew she was special", Brainard told TODAY. When he went to check on her in the morning, he found she had died. "It's probably going to be the same with her passing". Her family took home $1,500.

Brainard and Zsa Zsa drove for 30 hours from their home in Anoka, Minn., to compete in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif. "We were all saying our goodbyes".

Zsa Zsa was known for her protruding teeth and especially long tongue.

Ms Brainard said children used to sometimes shake that tongue as if giving a handshake to a paw.
