According to social media analytics service Socialblade, the nine biggest Twitter accounts - Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Ellen Degeneres, Christiano Ronaldo and YouTube - all saw drops of more than 2 million followers each.

Christian who goes by the username XtianDela lost over 500,000 followers which led him to a drop from over 1 million followers while Nyakundi lost over 400,000. Trump remains the 18th most-followed person on Twitter. Controversial blogger, Cyprian Nyakundi, has lost quite a lot of followers, from over 1 million to now below 700K. Social Blade, a social media platform user statistics website, is tracking the slide in real time.

Twitter argued that the recent move was aimed at building users' confidence and reflected the fact that follower counts are "a visible feature" on the platform.

Washington Post reports that Twitter would specifically be removing locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally.

He lost just 326,118 followers on Thursday, the day before most accounts saw a drop, and on Friday he regained 5,339 followers.

The microblogging site explained that it has been locking accounts when it detected sudden changes in account behaviour.

Twitter said that most people would see a change of about 4 followers or fewer but those people with larger follower accounts would experience a more significant drop.
