"I think that's very inappropriate", he said as Upstream went to press.

Reuters reported that US President Mr Donald Trump launched a sharp public attack on Germany on Wednesday for supporting a Baltic Sea gas pipeline deal with Russian Federation, saying Berlin had become "a captive to Russia" and he criticised it for failing to raise defence spending more.

It is unusual for Trump to express concerns about Russian behaviour and his remarks were a sharp departure from positive comments he made Tuesday about how Russian President Vladimir Putin poses less of a problem for him than his miserly North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies or the European Union's pending Brexit breakup with Britain.

Washington repeated a warning on Wednesday to Western firms invested in Russia's Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany that they were at risk of sanctions, and said Moscow was using the project to divide Europe.

"Supplies of pipeline gas do not lead to dependence of one country on another but to complete mutual dependence".

He asked, while Stoltenberg listened "Germany will have nearly 70 percent of their country controlled by Russian Federation with natural gas". "You take a look at some of the countries - they won't accept it (Nord Stream-2), because they don't want to be captive to Russian Federation". "Germany is totally controlled by Russian Federation, because they will be getting from 60 to 70% of their energy from Russian Federation and a new pipeline", Trump quipped.

"As for attempts to organize various attacks on this commercial project (Nord Stream 2 - TASS), we have said before that we consider this to be a manifestation of unfair competition", Peskov said.

"When it comes to Nord Stream, Canada has significant concerns about the project", she said. We're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all of these countries.

He added the USA criticism of the planned Nord Stream 2 pipeline was rooted in Washington's desire to encourage European Union nations to buy more expensive liquefied gas from the U.S.

He said that "Germany is totally controlled by Russian Federation, cause they are getting 60 to 70 percent of their energy from Russian Federation and a new pipeline". He said he also mentioned tripartite talks [on gas - EU-RF-Ukraine], which they will hold.
