Peter Donat, who played Agent Fox Mulder's father on The X-Files and acted in two Francis Ford Coppola films, died Monday at his home in Point Reyes, California.

According to his wife Maria Dejong Donat, he passed away from complications with diabetes and is survived by Maria, their sounds Caleb, Christopher, and Lucas, stepdaughters Barbara Park Shapiro and Marina Park Sutton, stepson Malcolm Park, Peter's brother Richard, and 11 grandchildren. Despite the brief run, he made quite an impression, but Donat had an over 50-year career in the acting field, starring in both television and movies.

According to the outlet, despite being most known for his recurring role on the popular drama series - he appeared on six episodes - he preferred his work in theater. He continued to have a steady appearance list until 1995, where he first appeared as William Mulder. However, the Canadian-born actor's career spanned across stage and film, as well.

20, 1928, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, he chose to go into acting after being inspired by his uncle, British film star (and Oscar winner) Robert Donat.

After hearing about his passing, Duchovny said in an email to the Times that Donat "had an easy gravitas as a performer and seemed to come from that generation that took the art seriously but not too seriously". Donat was once considered for the role of Tom Hagen in The Godfather, but it ultimately went to Robert Duvall.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
